No. 2  August 2024

Hey y’all!

We’re almost done with summer. Personally, I’m really looking forward to some cooler weather!  Here’s what we are up to at the shop this month while we try to stay cool:

We are planning to do a show at Shaker Hancock Village next month, so we are busy trying to make items. Planning for and going to a show is an immense amount of work. Honestly, before I started doing this, I had no idea. It is fun meeting so many new people but the packing and unpacking, setting up and repacking to go home is exhausting.

We started sending two emails this month featuring sale products. “Wool of the Week” sent on Mondays, features one wool at 30% off. Each week is a different wool so keep an eye out for your favorite one to show up. The second, “Fabulous Fiber Fridays”, where we seriously discount items. You never know what will show up and the prices are 50%-70% off. Check your email every Friday and act quickly. Items go fast and once they are gone, they are gone.

We are discussing dates for Pinecone classes we hope to do in October and November. Check in next month for dates and get ready to “hold the date”! Keep an eye on our website for other classes.

We received samples of wool from South Korea and are hoping this will be another avenue to purchase wool as we are rapidly losing suppliers in the U.S. We plan to purchase a few yards of four or five colors so quantities will be limited throughout the testing phase. You’ll be hearing from us when we’ve sorted through the forms and details involved in ordering from overseas.

We like to spend the summer trying to learn something new while it is quiet. Christine and I are attempting to learn several rug braiding butting techniques. Like everything else, there is more than one way to accomplish the same goal and butting a rug is no different. I have to admit, we are finding this challenging!

Last month, Christine and I took a wet felting class (held at the shop) with Talia Lefton. I have so many things going that felting isn’t something I wanted to venture into. I found this class a lot of fun and actually made something I was happy with (people who know me, know that is not an easy task, lol). Christine made a cute vase and I made a “bean pot” (without the lid). Oh no! Another rabbit hole! Talia did a class last week teaching people how to felt animals. While we didn’t take this class, it was fun to see what people made.

As an aside, for anyone who is interested, registration for classes at Hill Institute will be on Saturday, September 7th from 7:00 – 10:30 am.

PLEASE NOTE: WOOL & DYE WORKS IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH HILL INSTITUTE

YOU MUST REGISTER IN PERSON AT HILL INSTITUTE ONLY.
ALL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CLASSES AND/OR REGISTRATION MUST BE DIRECTED TO HILL INSTITUTE:  (413) 587-1725 https://hillinstitute.com

Lastly, starting in September, we will be open regular hours again: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00-4:00. We are thinking about staying open a little later one night a week so those who cannot leave work are able to stop in. Let us know your thoughts about this.

As always, I suggest calling first to ensure we are open, especially if you are coming from a distance. We strive to be open our stated hours but, well, life happens and occasionally we have to close. You can reach us at: (413) 587-0300.

Til next month,
cam

Is there anyone from this establishment that is interested in teaching school groups? Nothing like last minute, but thought I would apply for a LCC Grant and had this store in mind. The grant closes October 16th, nothing like last minute. ;-)
    -Thanks for your consideration.
